In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the Barca Dynasty, one of the most powerful in world history which nearly brought the mighty Roman Empire to its knees.
The Barca dynasty began as far back as 228BC and is referred to as the oldest in history. Led by Hamilcar Barca, he also saw through the Barcid family and was the father of Hannibal as well.
The Barca Family was a renowned Carthaginian family of Carthage originating around 247BC. Not the rulers of Carthage in the traditional sense but they helped navigate the direction of Carthaginian politics and statehood throughout the period of their reign.
While the etymology of the surname “Barca” remains disputed, it means “thunderbolt”, befitting for a family whose rule jolted the known world at the time.
A brief look into the life and achievement of Hamilcar saw him command the land forces of the Carthaginian land forces in Sicily from the year 247 BC to 241 BC during the tough stages of the First Punic war (264 BC – 241 BC). Much praise could be attached to Hamilcars’ ability to keep his army intact and successfully reigning supreme in the guerilla war against the Romans in Sicily. His retirement will later come in 241 BC after a peace treaty following the defeat of Carthage.
One of Hamilcars’ biggest feat was commanding and being instrumental to the conclusion of that conflict successfully when the Mercenary War broke out in 240 BC. He commanded the Carthaginian expedition to Spain in 237 BC and, for eight years, expanded the territory of Carthage in Spain before finally dying in battle in 228 BC. Hamilcar was solely responsible for creating the strategy which his son Hannibal implemented in the Second Punic War (218 BC – 201 BC) to bring the Roman Republic close to defeat.
Though unauthorized by the Carthaginian government, in 238 BC General Hamilcar Barca led an expedition into Spain. The ambitious Hamilcar Barca conquered parts of Spain, amassing great wealth from plunder, filling his public treasury. The dominance and control of Spain by the Barca family saw them strengthen their power in Carthage as well. The wealth bought him a proper army and helped him purchase majority support from the Carthaginian senate. This handed him the extraordinary power tagged the “Barca royal line.”
Various historians confirm that Hamilcar’s family was part of the landed aristocracy of Carthage. Hamilcar was only 28 when he received the Sicilian command in 247 BC. By this time, he had three daughters, and his son Hannibal was put to birth the same year.
The power and dominance will not cease as his son Hannibal Barca continued the legacy of his father and carried on the Barca family legacy by being a continuous thorn on the side of Romans. Hannibals’ brother was not left out as he supported the Barca family dominance in Carthage.
Not much is known about the history of the Barca family before the Punic Wars. In the words of Tony Bath, “The Barca family, which originally came from Cyrene, was a powerful one but not at that time among the first families of Carthage”.
We want to make certain clarifications that might not be obvious to certain readers of this historical work. The first is that Cyrene is a North-African city, which was at some point under Greek control. The original people of Cyrene were Black people. This brings us to the person of Hamilcar Barca. Many sources online have painted him to be a European, but that is pure Euro-centric fabrication and distortion of African (Black) history.
Hamilcar Barca was a Black man, just like his son Hannibal Barca, who seems to be more popular, with the name “Hannibal the Great”. In this article, we outline the deeds and life of Hannibal Barca, who took after his father, in the war against Rome.
Let us make no mistake, the Barca family were from Carthage, and Carthage was a Black civilization in North Africa. The present Arabs in North Africa today do not represent the original owners and inhabitants of ancient Carthage. This article here gives undoubtedly material evidence as to the Blackness of ancient Carthage.
No matter what the Euro-centric usurpers of Black history do, we who are awakened and who know the truth will continue to use our literature in defense of Black/African/Afro heritage worldwide.
